Semi-Caucasian Tribal Rugs of Iran

The Shahsavan tribe is one of the important tribes of Iran, living in the northwest of the country (Azerbaijan) and speaking in the Turkish language. Some Shahsavan people live a nomadic lifestyle, migrating two times a year, and their economy is based on cattle breeding and herds. Other sedentary Shahsavan people meet their domestic needs through agriculture. The Story of Shahsavan Rug

Shahsavan means the lovers of Shahs, are located in northwest Iran. According to historians, Shah Abbas, the great king of the Safavid dynasty in Iran, created this tribe to protect his western boundaries against invasive Turkish tribes. In exchange for their swaer of allegiance to the Shah, he promised to provide the required summer and winter pasture for their herds of sheep, so the tribe's name relates to this history. Nowadays, some Shahsavan tribe families have migrated to Hamadan or Varamin near Tehran and have forwarded a sedentary life, but they still maintain their cultures and originality that is visible in their rugs. Their carpet productions became popular in trading since 1970 in varied types, textures, and designs that are mostly similar to Caucasian carpets designs of geometrical shapes and vivid colors. Some Shahsavan carpets were exquisitely woven and likely created by women as a dowry or a gift to the tribe's head before marriage. Jajim rugs, and flat-woven carpets, are another prominent design woven by the northern Shahsavan tribe with vertical stripes and linking geometric flowers and are quite attractive in hue.
