The Afshar tribe is a semi-nomadic tribe located in different regions of Iran, such as the northwest, northeast, southeast, and southwest of the country. Still, they are mainly inhabited in the southeast of Iran, in Kerman, and the northwest, in Urmia. They speak Turkish and produce diverse carpets in unique designs with prevalent repeated and all-over motifs in red and blue.
As most designs of Afshar carpets come from the weaver's minds and imagination, the patterns are abstract and simple, mostly in geometrical shapes and floral motifs. One of the overall designs of Afshar rugs, called "Se Kaleh" by locals, is a composition of three cross-shaped jags near each border in the width of the carpet and three diamond medallions surrounded by hooks. The warp and weft are usually cottons, and the piles are wool.
✔They all have piles of wool and cotton warps.
✔The backgrounds of rugs are usually full of tiny patterns of geometric symbols of birds and shapes.
✔Three diamond medallions in allover patterns are popular in Afshar rugs.
✔ The rugs have small sizes due to the semi-nomadic condition of the Afshar tribe.
