Birjand rugs are produced in Birjand, the capital of the South Khorasan province of Iran, famous for its saffron and barberries. The city's population is more than 205,000, and people speak the Birjandi dialect, which is more similar to the ancient Parsi language.
Birjand rug may be a debtor to "
Moud" and "Dorokhsh" rugs. Still, among other
styles, it has a more specific design with well-woven and dyed techniques in the direction of other town carpets, like the Mahi pattern, Moharamat style, Kheshti structure, Boteh motif, and other popular designs in town carpets. Also, there is a unique medallion design in the Birjand rug called the "Saadi" medallion, sourced from Moud village. The rugs' warp and weft are made of cotton, and the piles are soft, delicate, and wooly, mostly dyed in dark blue, crimson, cream, and beige.
