All rugs and carpets 20–50 years old are called vintage rugs. These rugs aren't antique, but they have an old vibe. The most beautiful thing about vintage Persian rugs, which increases their popularity in modern taste, is that they represent ancient Persian art in an aged look. Persian vintage rugs have some prominent features despite their age! They are hand-woven, have short piles (as piles become flattened over time), faded colors and patterns, and piles may have disappeared in some parts. Vintage rugs get their identity over time. The main difference between real vintage and patina rugs (also called vintage) is that they aren't new-woven!
Patina rugs aren't real vintage rugs, but why do people everywhere, especially Persian producers, call them vintage? Actually, patina rugs are woven in vintage style! They are woven intentionally with faded colors and motifs! Patina rugs have unique patterns that are inspired by vintage rugs. Designers try to create patterns that look old (but, as you know, they aren't old). These rugs have limited colors and different pile heights. Some parts are flatweave or have short piles to indicate the old vibe. They may look a little more unnatural than vintage rugs, but they are well-woven and have become a trend in modern interior decoration. Today, many machine-made carpet factories in Iran are producing different collections of Patina rugs with fine fibers and high quality. Also, many handmade carpet workshops have started to make this famous Persian rug style, combining it with the patterns of traditional rugs.
Distressed rugs undergo an extensive chemical process to give them a rusted appearance. The natural wool is removed by shaving, washing, and covering the carpet with a solution. Chemical materials degrade the fibers and eat away at them, giving the rug a vintage look and worn-in appearance. Usually, secondhand, used, and injured handmade rugs are chosen for this chemical process. These rugs may not have 20–50 years of age, and the best way to recognize distressed rugs from real vintage rugs is by their structures. Distressed rugs have more flat woven parts and fewer colors.
