Birjand Rug

A Collection of Diverse and Qualified Rugs of Traditional Persian Town Carpets

Birjand rugs are produced in Birjand, the capital of the South Khorasan province of Iran, famous for its saffron and barberries. The city's population is more than 205,000, and people speak the Birjandi dialect, which is more similar to the ancient Parsi language.
Birjand rug may be a debtor to "Moud" and "Dorokhsh" rugs. Still, among other styles, it has a more specific design with well-woven and dyed techniques in the direction of other town carpets, like the Mahi pattern, Moharamat style, Kheshti structure, Boteh motif, and other popular designs in town carpets. Also, there is a unique medallion design in the Birjand rug called the "Saadi" medallion, sourced from Moud village. The rugs' warp and weft are made of cotton, and the piles are soft, delicate, and wooly, mostly dyed in dark blue, crimson, cream, and beige.

The Story of Birjand Rugs

The age of the carpet industry in Birjand in the trade market returns to almost 200 years ago (although other villages near Birjand have more experience in this industry). The city is in debt to Tabriz merchants, as they established many carpet workshops in Birjand. Many weavers from Azerbaijan migrate to Birjand and start weaving particular carpets similar to those found in northeast Iran. During the World Wars, the carpet industry in Birjand changed. They began to weave the Mahi and Panjeh motifs. On the field of the Panjeh Matn design, there are five concentric lozenge medallions; these rugs have high density and quality. The royal Amir Asadollah Alam family, who had lived in Birjand for centuries, directed the weaving of these Birjand carpets. Amir Asadolah Alam was the Pahlavi minister from 1962 to 1964. Recently, Birjand rugs' designs have included traditional Persian motifs of the Safavid dynasty like the Shah Abbas flower and also the Boteh motif. Though the quality of Birjand rugs decreases during World War II, they still have the highest quality in Khorasan provinces' carpet industries.

How to Identify Birjand Rugs?

✔ Birjand rugs are primarily famous for two rural-style carpets near the Birjand: “Moud” and “Dorokhsh.”
✔ Other rug designs are similar to those from different regions, like Kurdistan rug, Tabriz, and Bakhtiari, but in a specific form.
✔ All Birjand rugs have cotton warp and weft.
✔ Birjand carpets have a rich color palette with jewel tones and exquisite traditional motifs. Silk inlay is frequently used to accentuate the pristine wool pile of the characteristic Herati Fish Design.
