Yazd Rug

Yazd Rugs, The Sense of Traditional Rugs’ Softness in Exquisite Colorful Designs

Yazd is the capital of the Yazd Province, which is located in central Iran. It is a historic city that goes back to the year 1000 BCE. Yazd was initially the epicenter of Zoroastrian culture, and a tiny number of Zoroastrians still live there. Yazd rugs were classed and marketed as Kerman carpets in Western markets, particularly in America. This was the case because the city's weaving method, pattern, and coloring were comparable to those of the nearby Kerman Province. The choice of Kerman over Yazd was made to capitalize on Kerman's rich weaving tradition and reputation in the West. The carpets have a cotton basis and a thick, durable wool pile. Most Yazd carpets feature a center medallion surrounded by a symmetrical border. Colors used in export carpets are often pastel, but those made for the Iranian home are brighter and bolder. These carpets are ideal for high-traffic areas. Even with heavier fabrics, their knot count averages approximately 120 KPSI. Yazd's carpets are usually medium-sized; however, earlier varieties are available in larger sizes.

The Story of Yazd Rugs

Yazd is one of Iran's ancient and historic cities, a land of Zoroastrians and great merchants. The city mainly produced high-quality, imitable fabrics named "Darayee" (or Ikat as a global name), most famous for their fabrics, but carpet weaving hasn't been long-aged in this city. Between 1940 and 1945, the government established some carpet workshops in Yazd to produce unique rugs but later, demands for Kerman rugs expanded and affected Yazd rugs. Many merchants brought Kerman designers to the city to improve producing Kerman style rugs, so the specific designs of Yazd rugs extinct gradually, as now almost all Yazd rugs are inspired by Kerman and Isfahan rugs. Despite many similarities of Yazd rugs to other best carpet weaving cities, these carpet's colors are miscellaneous and warm, making sense of traditional Persian rugs from ancient periods.

How to Identify Yazd Rugs?

✔ Colors in Yazd carpets were typically brighter than tonalities in Kerman carpets, which only expert carpet traders could detect. The reason for choosing Kerman over Yazd was to capitalize on Kerman's rich weaving tradition and reputation in the West.
✔ In traditional Yazd rugs, Entirely wool, all silk, or an exact ratio of the two can be used.
✔ Many of these carpets are remarkably similar to Kermans', although they are often of higher quality than new Kermans' despite having a smaller knot count.
✔ Some Yazd weavers began to adopt Kashan patterns and coloring after WWII. These carpets were advertised as Kashans', popular in the international market.
