Khamseh Rug

A Sweet Combination of Persian Traditional Tribal Rugs

Khamseh tribe federation includes five main clans named Arabs, Basseri, Inalu, Baharlu, and Nafar, which have different languages, speaking Turkish, Persian, and Arabian. They live a semi-nomadic life in southwest Iran, Fars province, and their life economy is mainly based on cattle breeding and sometimes agriculture. Among many Persian carpet styles, Khamseh rugs may differ in different clans but are nearly inspired by Qashqai and Afshar rugs with replete backgrounds and detailed improvised patterns surrounding geometrical medallions with hooks. Their unique motif called “Morgh” is a down head bird that usually is woven symmetrically in front of each other in an allover composition. Totally the foundations of the rugs are made of wool. Their piles are also woolen and are usually short (rarely use cotton and goat hair in rug structures). Colors have a wide variety, but they are in a darker shade than Qashqai rugs, mainly including tanned and dark blue and ivory.

The Story of Khamseh Rugs

Khamseh tribe, factually the tribe of five, was organized in the 19th century by Naser al-din Shah Qajar to control the strength of Qashqai tribes. As the name of the tribe tells, it includes five main sub-tribes: Basseri, Arab, Inalu, Baharlu, and Nafar, which speak in different languages of Arabian, Persian and Turkish. Their rugs are similar to Qashqai and Afshar carpets in terms of style and geographic origins. The most recognizable Khamseh sign in their rugs is “Murgi” motifs that represent birds and fill the central background of their rugs around usually three diamond-shaped medallions. This tribe has more carpet tradings than the Qashqai tribe, so they mainly produce high-quality carpets of naturally dyed colors with fine handspun wool of their herds.

How to Identify Khamseh Rugs?

✔ Khamseh rugs are usually small-sized, as tribal looms are small and constructed portable.
✔ They have detailed patterns, including improvised geometrical tiny shapes, birds, animals, and human shapes.
✔ Also, repeated diamond shape medallions are surrounded with hooks.
✔ Mostly, Khamseh rugs' structures are based on wool.
