Senneh is the old name of Sanandaj, the capital of Kurdistan province in northwest Iran, with about 415,000 population who speak Kurdish. Sanandaj is famous as
“the creative city of music” by the UNESCO organization, and people there are rich in art and culture, specifically in carpet weaving. All rugs produced in this city are called “Senneh” rugs, with unique delicacy and soft piles that separate them from other
Kurdish carpets. The women of this city weave almost all rugs in Senneh style.
As the structure of Senneh rugs is so elegant and delicate, with fine and thin piles and yarns, the designs of rugs are also detailed and tiny in mostly allover style. Motifs are diverse and unique, like rose form called “Mirza Ali” flower, “Vakili” flower, amazing form of birds and flowers, weeping willow, and Boteh. Also, medallions and Herati/ Mahi designs are common in this area. They use fine hand spun wool for piles and cotton for warps and wefts. Senneh rugs and carpets contain different types like Kilim, considered the best Kilims in Iran. They all have actual soft, harmonized colors like shades of red, dark blue, tan, and orange.
